Nancy Patricia D'Alesandro Pelosi (; born March 26, 1940) is an American politician who serves as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019. A two-time House Speaker, Pelosi previously served in the post from 2007 to 2011. She is currently in her 17th term as a Member of the House of Representatives, first being elected in a 1987 special election. Pelosi is also a two-time House Minority Leader, serving from 2003 to 2007 and again from 2011 to 2019.
A member of the Democratic Party, Pelosi represents California's 12th congressional district, which consists of four-fifths of the city and county of San Francisco. The district was numbered as the 5th during Pelosi's first three terms in the House, and as the 8th from 1993 to 2013. She served as the House Minority Whip from 2002 to 2003, and was House Minority Leader from 2003 to 2007, holding the post during the 108th and 109th Congresses under George W. Bush. Pelosi is the first woman, Californian, and Italian-American to lead a major party in Congress. After the Democrats took control of the House in 2007 and increased their majority in 2009, Pelosi was elected Speaker of the House. Pelosi is the only woman to have served as Speaker, thus making her the highest-ranking female politician in American history. After the Democrats lost House control in the 2010 elections, Pelosi was elected as the Democratic Leader by House Democrats and therefore the Minority Leader in the Republican-controlled House from 2011 to 2019.Pelosi was a major opponent of the Iraq War as well as the Bush Administration's 2005 attempt to privatize Social Security. As Speaker, she was instrumental in the passage of many landmark bills including the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and 2010 Tax Relief Act served as economic stimulus amidst the Great Recession.
In the 2018 midterm elections, the Democrats under Leader Pelosi won control of the House, which resulted in a net gain of 41 seats and their largest gain of seats since the 1974 elections, when they picked up 49 seats. Pelosi was re-elected Speaker of the House of Representatives on the opening of the 116th U.S. Congress on January 3, 2019. Pelosi became the seventh individual to return to the Speakership on non-consecutive terms of office and the first woman to do so, as well as the first person since Democratic congressman Sam Rayburn in 1955.
