The 14th Malaysian general election (GE14 or PRU14, acronym in Malay: Pilihan Raya Umum ke-14) was held on 9 May 2018 to elect members of the 14th Parliament of Malaysia. At stake are all 222 seats in the Dewan Rakyat and 505 seats in 12 out of 13 state legislative assemblies. The 13th Parliament of Malaysia was dissolved on 7 April 2018. It would have been automatically dissolved on 24 June 2018, five years after the first meeting of the first session of the 13th Parliament of Malaysia on 24 June 2013.
The Constitution of Malaysia requires a general election to be held in the fifth calendar year unless it is dissolved earlier by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong due to a motion of no-confidence or at the request of the Prime Minister.
Early results from Malaysia's Election Commission indicate Pakatan Harapan, an opposition coalition contesting in most of Malaysia under the symbol of component party, the People's Justice Party, has won a simple majority of seats in the Dewan Rakyat, Malaysia's lower house of parliament, with 113 seats. In addition, two independent candidates and the Sabah Heritage Party, informally aligned with Pakatan Harapan, have won another 10 seats, giving the opposition alliance a total of 123 seats in the new Parliament, enough to form a government.
This would mark a historic defeat for the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, which had never lost control of Malaysia's government since the country's independence in 1957. This would also make Dr. Mahathir Mohamad the next Prime Minister of Malaysia and, at 92 years old, the oldest head of government in the world - although he has indicated he would give way to jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim after seeking a royal pardon for him.
