With 256,468 views on Sunday, 6 September 2026 our article of the day is 2026 Saxony-Anhalt state election.

The 2026 Saxony-Anhalt state election was held on 6 September 2026 to elect the 9th Landtag of Saxony-Anhalt, two weeks before the state elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

This election drew significant attention due to the large polling lead of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), including the possibility it could win an outright majority. The AfD is subject to a firewall policy as all other major parties refuse to cooperate with them; its state branch is under surveillance by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which classified it as a "confirmed right-wing extremist movement" in 2023.

The far-right AfD won a landslide victory, doubling its support and placing first with 43.8% of the vote though they narrowly missed an absolute majority of seats. The governing CDU lost more than half of its supporters, falling to 17.2%. The Left Party, the SPD, and the Greens each have won about 9%. The BSW passed the 5% election threshold, while the FDP lost representation.

The voter turnout was all-time high at 77.8%, up from 60% in 2021, and the parliament will have six parties again. Parliament size was reduced from expanded 97 seats towards the basic size of 83. After SPD and Greens in July polled at or under 5%, tactical voting campaigns supported them, seemingly with success, and at the cost of CDU and The Left, which dropped from third-largest to fifth-ranked party behind SPD and Greens which had small gains compared to 2021.

The AfD candidates, who in 2021 had won only 1 of 41 constituencies, won 38 in 2026, while the CDU is down from 40 to none, and 3 are won by The Left.
