On January 1, 2025, at around 3:15 a.m. CST (UTC–6), a man drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States, then exited the truck and engaged in a shoot-out with police before being fatally shot. Fifteen people were killed, including the suspect, and at least 35 others were injured, including two police officers, who were shot. The attack occurred during New Year celebrations in the city, which was scheduled to host the college football Sugar Bowl game later that day.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified the driver as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, an American-born resident of Houston, Texas, and a convert to Islam. An Islamic State (IS) jihadist flag was found on the back of the truck. The FBI is investigating the attack as an act of terrorism. The FBI initially investigated the attack in conjunction with a vehicle explosion at Trump International Hotel Las Vegas that occurred the same day, but later stated that they could find "no definitive link" between the two.
