With 193,581 views on Friday, 7 July 2023 our article of the day is Threads (app).
Threads is an online social media and social networking service owned by American technology company Meta Platforms. The social network reached 78 million users in its first 48 hours, breaking a record for rapid user signups previously set by ChatGPT. The app functions similarly to other microblogging platforms like Twitter: users can post and share text, images, and videos; reply to, repost, and like posts by others. The app is available on iOS and Android with full functionality and on the web with limited functionality, soon to be expanded.
The app works adjacent to Instagram: users need to have an Instagram account to sign up and are required to use the same handle. Following the acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk, Meta employees initially discussed the rollout of Instagram Notes, a text-based feature to Instagram. The employees also discussed creating a separate and independent text-focused app, which gave rise to Threads. Development on Threads began in January 2023, then internally known as "Project 92". Information on Threads was released in March, and The Verge published details of an internal company-wide meeting in June. Details emerged about Threads in July, followed by the app's pre-launch appearance onto the Apple App Store on July 3 with a release date of July 6.
Threads officially launched on July 5 in 100 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Japan.
