Adipurush (transl. First man) is a 2023 Indian epic mythological action film based on the epic Ramayana. The film is written and directed by Om Raut and produced by T-Series and Retrophiles. Shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu, the film stars Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan, Kriti Sanon, Sunny Singh and Devdatta Nage.
Adipurush was announced in August 2020, through an official motion poster. Principal photography commenced in February 2021 and ended in November 2021 taking place primarily in Mumbai. The film's music is composed by Ajay–Atul. Adipurush is budgeted at ₹500 crore (US$63 million) making it the most expensive Indian film ever made. It released on 16 June 2023 to highly negative reviews from both the critics and audience, alike. Raut's direction, dialogues, use of CGI/VFX, action sequences, modernization of the epic, potrayal of Lankesh, color grading of Lanka, physical apperance of Raghava, editing and three-hour runtime all received huge criticism and was heavily panned. However, the musical score and soundtrack were highly praised.
Many critics slammed it as a terrible and unnecessary adaptation of the Ramayan, whilst also stating that it destroyed the essence of the original source.
