The 2022 Malaysian general election, formally the 15th Malaysian general election (GE15) (Malay: Pilihan Raya Umum Ke-15), was held on 19 November 2022 to elect the members of the Dewan Rakyat in the 15th Parliament of Malaysia. 220 seats in the Dewan Rakyat were contested on polling day. Voting in Baram was suspended on polling day due to bad weather preventing poll workers from reaching their places of duty. Between 2020 and 2022, the prospect of an early federal election was high due to a political crisis. Political instability caused by members of parliament switching parties or coalitions, combined with the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, has contributed to the resignation of two prime ministers and the collapse of each of their respective coalition governments since the prior election in 2018.
The 14th Parliament was due to expire on 16 July 2023, five years after the first meeting of the first session of the 14th Parliament of Malaysia on 16 July 2018. However, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah dissolved the legislature at the request of the incumbent Prime Minister, Ismail Sabri Yaakob on 10 October 2022. Constitutionally, the election would have to be held within 60 days of the dissolution, making 9 December 2022 the last possible polling day. Traditionally, it was the norm that general elections for all state legislatures except Sarawak were held concurrently as a cost-saving measure. However, the states can dissolve their own legislatures independently from Parliament, and several states (Sabah, Malacca and Johor) had early elections resulting from the aforementioned political crises, disrupting their usual electoral cycle. These states, and Sarawak, have indicated that they will not be holding an election concurrently. Furthermore, several other states, primarily those under a Pakatan Harapan or Perikatan Nasional government, have stated that they would prefer to complete a full term. As of 19 October, all Pakatan-led states, Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, as well as Perikatan-led states, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, have confirmed to be not dissolving their state assemblies. The general election is the first general election in which 18–20 year olds are eligible to vote following a constitutional amendment to lower the voting age to 18. Additionally, all voters have been automatically registered, so the electorate has expanded by around 6 million people or 30%. The general election is expected to be held concurrently with the 2022 Malaysian state elections for the state assemblies of Pahang, Perak and Perlis alongside the 2022 Bugaya by-election for the Sabah state assembly seat of Bugaya.
