Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.

The random article for Wednesday, 17 July 2019 is Madonna of the Pomegranate.

The Madonna of the Pomegranate (Madonna della Melagrana) is a painting by the Italian Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli, circa 1487. It is housed in the Uffizi Gallery of Florence, Italy.

The subject of the painting shows the Madonna and the Christ Child flanked by angels, with a pomegranate in hand. The pomegranate is the symbol of Christ's future suffering.

Several copies of the work exist, currently held at the Berlin State Museums, the Wernher Collection in London and the Aynard Collection at Lyon.

In late February 2019 it was announced that the long held smaller "imitation" hanging in the Wernher Collection at the Ranger's House in London was actually a product of Botticelli's Florence studio. Purchased in 1897 by Julius Wernher, the wealthy diamond magnate, this analysis and confirmation was done by English Heritage.
