The random article for Monday, 4 November 2019 is Julius Nepos.
Julius Nepos (full name: Flavius Julius Nepos Augustus; c. AD 430 – 480) was de jure and de facto Western Roman Emperor from AD 474 to 475 and then only de jure until his death in AD 480. He was also the ruler of Roman Dalmatia from AD 468 to 480. Nepos is considered to be the final Western Roman Emperor as Nepos bore the imperial title until his death. But, others consider the western line to have ended with Romulus Augustulus in AD 476 despite the Eastern empire never formally recognising Romulus Augustulus as a western emperor. This was argued by J. B. Bury who stated that 'Zeno regarded Augustulus as a usurper'. In contrast, the Eastern Roman Empire and its line of emperors survived this period.
Nepos overthrew Glycerius without a fight and proclaimed himself western emperor on 19 or 24 June 474. Orestes, the Magister Militum, turned his forces on Nepos on August 28, 475, and deposed Nepos, forcing him to flee by ship to Dalmatia. Orestes crowned his son, Romulus Augustus, as Emperor. A few months later Odoacer defeated and killed Orestes and deposed Romulus in 476 and thus signalling the end of the western Roman Empire. Nepos was assassinated in 480, and the Eastern Roman Emperor Zeno formally abolished the Western division of the Empire.
