Our random article today is British Union of Social Work Employees.
The British Union of Social Work Employees (BUSWE) was a trade union representing social workers in the United Kingdom.
In 1978, the British Association of Social Workers (BASW), a professional body, decided to form an associated trade union, the British Union of Social Work. However, this move was opposed by unions which already represented social workers, particularly the National Association of Local Government Officers (NALGO). The BASW decided to withdraw its support for the new union, but the union's leadership wished to continue. They relocated the union to Manchester, and in 1981 merged with the small National Union of Social Workers, to form the "British Union of Social Work Employees".
The union survived and attempted to affiliate to the Trades Union Congress, but was unsuccessful, due to opposition from NALGO and its successor, Unison. By 2007, it had 1,640 members. It merged into Community in 2008.
